In late January, I had the wonderful pleasure to meet and interview with News Anchor and Television Personality, Gayle Guyardo of WFLA - Channel 8 News, which airs on NBC. Gayle is an absolutely wonderful human being, and a profound communicator and business professional. We talked extensively about my new book, Caught Between a Dream and a Job, which she loves and has even read portions of, to her daughters! Gayle and I created a powerful tag-team and look forward to doing many more wonderful projects together in the future. On the 15th of January, I had the wonderful opportunity to be featured LIVE on The Daytime Show. It was a great taping, and the show aired on the 16th. Once I get a copy of it, I will be sure to upload it to DWE-TV so you can watch it, if you missed it. Dave, the host, asked me a very interesting question that I get often. He asked me if it’s really possible for people to do what they enjoy and make money at it. I told him, absolutely, and not only is it possible, it’s necessary if you want to live your dreams! People from various walks of life often ask me for my advice on how to get starting building and improving their public speaking and presentation skills. It inspires me to see people who want to better themselves so I am always eager to help. Interestingly enough, I often find myself giving the same advice over and over again, so I decided to write a blog about it so I could duplicate my advice for the thousands that seek it. Below are a few great, easy, and affordable ways to immediately begin the journey of mastering your speaking and presentation skills.

1. Speak often! The only way to get better is to do it more often. Most people who complain about not being effective speakers and presenters also don’t do that often, which reveals the problem. Repetition is the mother of skill, so you’ve gotta start speaking regularly to become a better speaker.

2. Join your local Toastmaster Club and excel within it. Toastmasters International is a worldwide public speaking and presentation skills development organization that has chapters in nearly every city in America and across the world. Through Toastmasters, you can learn to deliver many different types of presentations in various ways, while being evaluated by a group of caring and constructive peers who only want to see you succeed. Many clubs are small in number which enables you to get better in a small group environment, which for many people is often less intimidating. Visit www.Toastmasters.org to find a club near you.

4. Practice what you learn from my DVD system in your Toastmasters meetings. Once you feel a level of confidence from attending Toastmasters, get out there and speak to as many groups as will listen and make sure you speak to groups both inside and outside your comfort zone.

5. If you are serious about Professional Speaking and/or Speaking as a career field, I highly recommend that you research and attend the National Speakers Association. NSA is the leading professional association for speakers, providing resources, relationships, and education designed to advance the skills, integrity and value of its members and the speaking profession as a whole. Visit www.nsaspeaker.org to learn more about NSA. It’s one of the best organizations for helping you develop and implement your business model as a speaking professional and expert. I am a member and have been for several years, and it truly has impacted my career for the better!

7. Consider a Professional Speaking Boot Camp of some sort. There are many out there, and I in fact conduct them periodically as well. Attending the right boot camp can teach you over a weekend what it takes the average person 5 to 7 years to learn, just without all of the introductory bumps and bruises. Having attended boot camps and conducted boot camps myself, I am a strong believer in the power of boot camps, and suggest that you do your research in considering which one to become a part of. The goal is to learn from someone who is much further along then you are, as well as someone with whom you feel a genuine connection.
